Aqua Calls It Quits: Danish Pop Group Breaks Up After 30 Years

Danish pop group Aqua, known for their 1997 smash hit 'Barbie Girl,' has announced they are breaking up. The group shared the news via a statement on Instagram, marking the end of an era for the dance-pop sensation.

A Thank You to Fans

The band—comprising Lene Nystrom, Rene Dif, and Soren Rasted—expressed deep gratitude to their supporters. 'AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we’ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of,' the statement read. 'We’ve traveled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever.'

Time to Move On

Now in their 50s, the group members believe it is the right moment to say goodbye. 'When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together,' they said. 'For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact.'

Controversial Beginnings

Aqua took the world by storm with 'Barbie Girl,' a catchy track from their 1997 album 'Aquarium.' The song's lyrics, 'I'm a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world,' lampooned the iconic doll. Mattel, the company behind Barbie, sued Aqua's label MCA Records, claiming the single violated Barbie's trademark and sexualized the toy. A judge dismissed the lawsuit, ruling the song was protected as a parody. Eventually, Mattel changed its stance, using the song to promote the doll and including a version in the 'Barbie' movie starring Margot Robbie.

Aqua's breakup marks the end of a three-decade journey that brought joy to millions worldwide. The group leaves behind a legacy of infectious pop tunes and unforgettable performances.
