Malcolm in the Middle Reboot Trailer Drops, Filmed in Vancouver
Vancouver-shot Malcolm in the Middle reboot trailer released

The long-awaited return of a beloved dysfunctional TV family is finally in sight. Hulu has released the first official trailer for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, a four-part limited series revival that was shot in Vancouver.

Back to the Chaos: Premiere Date and Plot

The iconic sitcom, which originally aired from 2000 to 2006, is set to make its comeback after nearly two decades. Fans can mark their calendars for April 10, when the series premieres on both Hulu and Disney+.

The new chapter finds Malcolm, played once again by Frankie Muniz, living a successful life far from his chaotic family. His peaceful existence is upended when he is guilt-tripped into returning home for his parents' 40th wedding anniversary. The trailer perfectly captures the show's signature tone, with Malcolm quipping, “My life is fantastic now. All I had to do was stay away from my family.”

The Family Reunites On and Off Screen

The core cast is back, with Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprising their roles as the perpetually stressed parents, Hal and Lois. Chris Kennedy Masterson (Francis), Justin Berfield (Reese), and Emy Coligado (Piama) also return.

In a recent interview with People magazine, Frankie Muniz expressed how seamless it felt to step back into Malcolm's shoes. “It was as if not a single day went by. All of us — every single person — instantly fell back into their characters with, I’m talking the first table read,” Muniz said, calling the experience one of the best of his career.

Bryan Cranston shared similar sentiments, telling People, “Slipping back into that character of Hal for me was so rewarding — I missed him. He’s a sweet, lovable man... and it was fun to see all my whole family back together. It was great.”

New Faces and a Vancouver Backdrop

The revival also introduces new characters to the family dynamic. Keeley Karsten joins as Malcolm's daughter, Leah, while Vaughan Murrae plays the youngest sibling, Kelly. Kiana Madeira appears as Malcolm's girlfriend, Tristan. The role of Dewey is now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, taking over from original actor Erik Per Sullivan.

The production's choice of Vancouver as its filming location adds a Canadian connection to this major streaming release. The city's versatile landscapes often stand in for various American settings, continuing its reputation as Hollywood North.

With the trailer now live, anticipation is building for April 10, when audiences can finally see if life is still unfair for one of television's most memorably frantic families.
