Noah Wyle, best known for his role as Dr. John Carter on the iconic medical drama ER, has opened up about his financial struggles after the show ended. In a recent interview, the actor confessed that he squandered nearly all the money he earned during his time on the series, which made him a household name.
From ER stardom to financial reset
Wyle starred alongside George Clooney on ER for more than a decade, earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. At the peak of the show's success, he was reportedly making close to $9 million per season. However, the wealth did not last. "Not to make it a sob story, but everything I pretty much had made and earned on ER, I spent," Wyle said, according to Page Six.
The harsh reality forced him to scale back his lifestyle and take on work for practical reasons rather than passion. For nearly 20 years after ER ended, Wyle navigated a career that included various roles but never matched the financial heights of his early success.
The road back: COVID-19 and Hollywood strikes
Like many in the entertainment industry, Wyle faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, when production shut down and his career stalled. During that time, he heard from real healthcare workers who wanted more authentic portrayals of medical professionals on screen. The situation worsened in 2023 when the Hollywood strikes left him, in his own words, "profoundly depressed," according to Page Six, citing The New York Times.
Despite the difficulties, this period helped shape what came next. Wyle teamed up again with ER collaborators R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells to develop a new medical drama. Their original plan was a reboot of ER focusing on an older Dr. John Carter, but when talks with Warner Bros. collapsed, they pivoted.
Creating The Pitt: A new medical drama
"I just wanted to put this spotlight back on these first responders," Wyle said, per Page Six, citing Vulture. The team realized they didn't need a reboot to achieve that goal and instead built something new. The result was The Pitt, a series that tracks a single shift inside a busy trauma centre, leaning more into realism than spectacle.
Wyle reprises his role as a doctor, now playing Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, the lead character in the show. The gamble paid off: when The Pitt premiered in January 2025, it quickly became a hit, earning a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 13 Emmy nominations, according to HELLO! magazine. Wyle even won the award for Best Lead Actor.
Season 2 and critical acclaim
Season 2 of The Pitt returned on January 8, drawing praise from critics like The Washington Post for focusing on the everyday realities of healthcare instead of non-stop drama. Wyle's performance has been widely acclaimed, marking a triumphant return to the genre that made him famous.
Reflecting on his journey, Wyle acknowledged that the financial struggles and career setbacks ultimately led him to a more meaningful project. "I spent everything I made, but I'm grateful for the second chance," he said.
