New Jersey deathcore titans Lorna Shore are bringing their scientifically validated chaos to the Grey Eagle Event Centre. Since 2022, millions have peered down vocalist Will Ramos's throat—all in the name of research.
The Science Behind the Screams
Ramos, known for his supernaturally distorted vocals, became the subject of a unique study. Elizabeth Zharoff, host of the YouTube channel Charismatic Voice, took Ramos to the University of Utah's Otolaryngology department for tests. Dubbed "Patient Zero," Ramos underwent procedures including a dynamic MRI, respiratory kinematics, multiple throat scoping, and needle insertion into the muscles surrounding his larynx. The footage garnered over 4.5 million views on YouTube.
Dr. Ingo Titze, a researcher at the university, was reportedly astonished by Ramos's vocal capabilities. "He literally stood up from his seat with his jaw dropped when he saw how Will's throat twisted," Zharoff noted. The studies became documentaries and viral sensations, highlighting the technical complexity of deathcore vocals.
Ramos's Perspective
While the procedures were uncomfortable—"When they started sticking needles in the neck, I was like 'Whoaaaa!'"—Ramos found the experience enlightening. "It changes my whole perspective on the stuff I'm doing," he said. "Something like that gets put into a scientific textbook, and somebody can learn about it when they're in college. That one is for my dad, who always wanted me to do good in school. I didn't do good in school, but I'm in school for other people to learn from."
Ramos added that he would participate again if asked, though he's unsure what more they could discover. The findings support what heavy music enthusiasts have long argued: deathcore requires immense technical skill.
