Laura Dern Joins 'The White Lotus' Season 4 After Helena Bonham Carter Exit
Laura Dern Replaces Helena Bonham Carter on 'The White Lotus'

An Oscar nominee is leaving The White Lotus, and an Oscar winner is checking in — mere days into production.

Laura Dern has been tapped to join the fourth season of the Emmy-winning show after it was announced last week that Helena Bonham Carter was cut from the HBO hit, shocking fans who were eager to see the actress on the Mike White set.

Why the last-minute recast?

“With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline.

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks,” the statement continued. “HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

Production had already begun and Carter had shot her first scenes when creator White, who writes and directs each episode, “felt that her character as originally conceived was not what it should be,” sources told Deadline, resulting in the decision to rework the character and recast her.

Dern and White, together again

Enter Dern, who co-created the 2011 HBO series Enlightened with none other than White (and which earned Dern a Best Actress Golden Globe in 2012).

The two also previously collaborated on the 2007 film Year of the Dog, so it appears to be a natural fit for a last-minute recast.

The White Lotus explores one week in the lives of wealthy guests and staff at a global luxury resort chain, with Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand serving as the settings for the first three seasons.

The next instalment, which is expected to be released in 2027, follows a new group in France during the week of the Cannes Film Festival.

Aside from Carter and now Dern, other new cast members include Chris Messina, Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Rosie Perez, Sandra Bernhard, Max Greenfield, Chloe Bennet, Kumail Nanjiani, and Heather Graham.
