Grey's Anatomy Spinoff Heads to Texas: New Show Ordered by ABC
Grey's Anatomy Spinoff Set in Texas Ordered by ABC

ABC has officially ordered a new spinoff of the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and this time the story will move from Seattle's rainy streets to the wide-open spaces of West Texas. The still-untitled show is expected to debut in mid-2027 and will be co-created by Shonda Rhimes and current Grey's showrunner Meg Marinis, with Ellen Pompeo also serving as an executive producer.

New One-Hour Drama Set in Cowboy Country

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new hour-long drama will be set in a rural medical center that serves as patients' “last chance” for care before “miles of nowhere,” as described by ABC. Marinis noted that the project is especially meaningful because it takes place in her home state of Texas.

“This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey's for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas,” Marinis said in a statement, per USA Today.

Backdrop Triggers Mixed Reactions

The Texas setting has already sparked plenty of online debate, reports CBC. Some fans were caught off guard by the move, especially since several former Grey's characters ended up in places like Boston, Switzerland, and Paris over the years.

One user on X bluntly asked, “Who is even in Texas?” Others were much more into the idea. One fan praised the shift away from Seattle, writing, “Shonda bringing the drama to the desert with rural hospital chaos is actually genius. Last chance medical center before miles of nothing? The hallway walks are about to hit different with tumbleweeds and cowboy boots.”

How Will This Newest Spinoff Be Different from the Others?

The series will become the fourth entry in the Grey's franchise, following the original show along with Private Practice and Station 19, according to EW. It is also the first spinoff that won't be built around a main character from the original series.

Grey's Anatomy first premiered in 2005 and quickly became a TV powerhouse. Its first spinoff, Private Practice, launched in 2007 and followed Addison Montgomery, played by Kate Walsh, after she left Seattle Grace following her split from Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey. The show ran for six seasons. Station 19 later expanded the universe by focusing on Seattle firefighters and aired from 2018 to 2024.

Meanwhile, Season 22 of Grey's wrapped on May 7 by sending longtime characters Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman off to start a new life together in Paris.
