Vancouver Film Blue Heron Earns Seven Canadian Screen Award Nominations
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has unveiled the nominees for the prestigious 2026 Canadian Screen Awards, with Vancouver's film industry making a significant impact. Leading the television and overall categories is the CBC series North of North, which has secured an impressive twenty nominations.
Top Contenders in Television and Film
North of North has been recognized in multiple categories, including best comedy series, best ensemble performance in comedy, and a best lead performer nomination for Anna Lambe. Close behind is the drama series Heated Rivalry with eighteen nominations, featuring Vancouver's Hudson Williams up for best lead performer in drama.
On the film side, the feature 40 Acres leads with ten nominations. However, the Vancouver-produced film Blue Heron has garnered substantial attention with seven nominations. This debut feature from Vancouver director and writer Sophy Romvari is nominated for best motion picture, best director, and best original screenplay. Additionally, Vancouver actor Edik Beddoes has received a nomination for best supporting role in drama.
Director Sophy Romvari Expresses Gratitude
In an email statement to Postmedia, Sophy Romvari shared her pride and appreciation for the recognition. "I'm so proud of all of my talented collaborators whose work is being recognized by the Academy," Romvari said. Blue Heron, starring Eylul Guven and Edik Beddoes, is scheduled to hit theaters on April 24, 2026.
British Columbia's Strong Presence Across Categories
Other films with British Columbia connections have also earned nominations. Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery and The Track are both nominated in the best feature length documentary category. In television, the Vancouver-shot series Wild Cards is up for best drama series, while CTV News Vancouver at 6 and Global Newshour at 6 are competing for best local newscast.
Canadian Screen Awards Celebration Details
The Canadian Screen Awards celebrate excellence across 146 categories in film, television, and digital media. The awards will be presented over four days during Canadian Screen Week in May 2026 in Toronto. The festivities will culminate with the Canadian Screen Awards show on May 31 at 8 p.m., broadcast on CBC, CBC Gem, Crave, CTV, Global, and STACKTV. The event will be hosted by actor and comedian Andrew Phung.
