Toronto Venue Cancels All Remaining Shen Yun Shows Amid Escalating Security Concerns

The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto has made the unprecedented decision to cancel all five remaining Shen Yun performances following what local presenter, the Falun Dafa Association of Toronto (FDAT), describes as "escalating threats" and "hoax bomb threats" targeting the classical Chinese dance and music production.

From Initial Cancellation to Complete Shutdown

Initially, only last Sunday's performance was cancelled due to a bomb threat. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated. According to FDAT, after the initial Sunday cancellation, the Four Seasons Centre received "more threats" leading to the cancellation of all remaining shows scheduled for Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There were two performances planned for Saturday alone.

Toronto Police confirmed to media outlets that bomb threats were made only on Sunday and Monday, with none reported since. Despite this, the venue's management decided the security situation had become untenable for continuing the production.

Organizers Point Finger at Chinese Communist Party

FDAT attributes what they call "the fake threats" to what they describe as Beijing's systematic global campaign to stop Shen Yun. The organization claims the show presents the beauty of "China before communism" and brings attention to modern human rights abuses in China.

"We are all victims," said Joel Chipkar, spokesperson for FDAT, in a press release. "We condemn the CCP for its continued threats to Canadians and our institutions and urge the theatre to stand with artists and reverse its decision."

Security Measures Proved Insufficient

On Monday, FDAT says the Four Seasons Centre told them the remaining shows would proceed with enhanced security measures including:

  • K-9 services on site for the entire run
  • Additional screening procedures
  • Increased security personnel

However, by Tuesday, the venue informed FDAT that it had received escalating threats over the past 48 hours and decided to cancel all remaining performances.

"We fully cooperated and agreed to enhance security. Despite that, the show was cancelled," Chipkar stated. "Thousands of audience members have been affected."

Pattern of Threats Across Canada

FDAT reports that over the past two years, more than a dozen false bomb and death threats have targeted Shen Yun performances across Canada, including recent runs in:

  1. Mississauga's Better Living Centre
  2. Kitchener venues
  3. Vancouver locations

In all previous cases, the threats were deemed non-credible, venues implemented safety measures, conducted sweeps, and proceeded with performances. CP24 reported the Mississauga show started two hours late on March 15 after a threat was received that day.

Global Context and Refund Process

Globally, FDAT claims over 150 similar false bomb threats have been received, all aimed at shutting down Shen Yun performances. According to their statement, "no threat has ever materialized, all the shows have continued to perform — until now."

The organization's press release states: "Shen Yun was created by people who practice the peaceful spiritual discipline of Falun Dafa, which has faced violent persecution by the Chinese Communist Party for 27 years because of its independence and spiritual values."

With the cancellations affecting thousands of ticket holders, Shen Yun has announced that due to the high volume, refunds cannot be processed immediately and asked for patience. Patrons may choose to convert their tickets into a non-expiring Shen Yun gift card for future performances instead.

The Four Seasons Centre's decision marks what FDAT calls a "regrettably unprecedented" development in the ongoing challenges facing Shen Yun performances in Canada and internationally.
