As the holiday glow fades and a familiar winter chill returns to the prairies, Saskatoon offers a vibrant lineup of local events to keep residents engaged and entertained indoors. This weekend, from January 9 to 11, 2026, the city's cultural scene provides the perfect antidote to the cold, featuring music, theatre, circus arts, and history.
Local Music Takes the Stage
The weekend's musical offerings provide warmth through sound. Michelle Lee-Klassen will celebrate a significant career milestone with the launch party for her debut EP. The event, featuring her full band and the release of a new single titled Year of the Snake, will also include guest performances by Julia Ella and the Umbrellas, and Brooke Cherry Nickel. This 19+ show begins at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Art Bar.
Over at The Bassment, two distinct concerts await. On Friday at 8:30 p.m., Fabian Minnema and his band will pay tribute to rock legend Steve Miller with a performance of hits from 1968 to 1982. Then, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., The Accordion Project returns for its fifth showcase. Ray Penner and Ken Pizurny, joined by Matt Bender and Peter Pizurny, will weave through jazz, Latin, Cajun, and global traditional melodies.
Captivating Performances and Local History
For families and those seeking visual spectacle, Fly Studios YXE presents an aerial circus adaptation of The Jungle Book. This unique retelling of Rudyard Kipling's classic, using aerial silks, hoops, trapeze, and original narration, will be performed at Persephone Theatre on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.. A portion of the proceeds will support Creative Kids Saskatchewan.
The local theatre scene presents a powerful new work. Live Five and So.Glad.Arts are staging The Wives. The Concubines. The Ritual., a three-act play by Peace Akintade. The production explores the lives of five of King Solomon's concubines as they question their destinies. It runs until January 18 at The Refinery.
Celebrating Five Decades of Heritage
Marking a major community anniversary, the Saskatoon Heritage Society hosts its annual New Year's social. This year's event, titled Birth of the Saskatoon Heritage Society, celebrates the organization's 50th anniversary. It promises an interactive afternoon for history enthusiasts to connect and commemorate the city's past.
From the energy of a live music launch to the grace of aerial artists and the thoughtful dialogue of local theatre, Saskatoon's weekend roster is designed to ignite curiosity and provide communal warmth during the heart of winter.
