Edmonton's Family Day Weekend: Festivities and Activities Guide
Family Day Weekend Activities in Edmonton

As Family Day weekend approaches in Edmonton, a slight drop in temperatures should not discourage residents from exploring the array of diverse activities planned across the city. This holiday weekend offers numerous opportunities for families to engage in festive events, ranging from cultural performances to sports tournaments, all designed to celebrate togetherness and community spirit.

Celebration at the Alberta Legislature

On Family Day, February 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Albertans are invited to the Legislature Building, Legislature pedway, and the Queen Elizabeth II Building Visitor Centre for a variety of events and activities. The Queen Elizabeth II Building will feature magic shows, circus acts, and music and dance performances throughout the day. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a Lego Zone and interactive spaces such as the Borealis Gallery, the Pehonan Theatre, Capital Gifts, and a Democracy Discovery Centre.

Performers include Canadian grandmaster fiddle champion Daniel Gervais, magician Ron Pearson, youth entertainer Jojo’s Magic Circus, and interactive children’s performer Seeka Sings. Visitors can also attend an open house at the Legislature Building, participate in crafts, or join story time sessions. All events are free to everyone, with limited on-site parking available, so public transit is recommended for convenience.

Stollery Kids Hockey Tournament

The annual fundraising hockey tournament for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is scheduled for this weekend from February 13 to 16 at the Booster Juice Recreation Centre in Terwillegar. Known as the Stollery Family Day Classic, now in its 15th year, the tournament has raised an impressive $5.3 million since 2011. This year’s proceeds will support the Giving Comfort program at the Stollery, which provides essential items for families and children in hospital.

Over 108 hockey teams, ranging from novice to bantam levels, will participate in this annual event, making it a significant community gathering that combines sports with charitable giving.

City of Edmonton Activities

Downtown Edmonton will host numerous free activities this weekend, offering family-friendly entertainment and engagement. On February 16, the Edmonton Arts Council is organizing activities from noon to 5 p.m. in the Downtown Arts District, including Sir Winston Churchill Square, city hall, the Art Gallery of Alberta, Citadel Theatre, Stanley A. Milner Library, and the Royal Alberta Museum.

Free skate rentals will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Sir Winston Churchill Square from noon to 4 p.m. At city hall, the Mbira Renaissance Band will perform at 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m., and 3 p.m., while a dance fitness class by Shasily will be offered at 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Art Gallery of Alberta will feature games such as bingo, crafts, a performance by Rapid Fire Theatre, and Japanese drumming by Booming Tree from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The gallery will offer free admission during these times, with final admission at 4:15 p.m., providing an accessible cultural experience for all ages.
