Fires and tigers and pirates, oh my! This year's North Country Fair embraces a skull-and-crossbones theme more than usual, with Celtic-punk band Captain Tractor headlining for the first time in its 33-year history. The festival, now in its 48th year, takes place near Driftpile, Alta., on the summer solstice weekend.
A Pirate-Themed Celebration
Artistic director Laurie Iverson notes that Captain Tractor, known for its cover of Arrogant Worms' The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, will finally grace the stage on Friday and Saturday nights. The band joins a lineup that includes Captain Thunderpants, folk icon John Wort Hannam, duo Jed and the Valentine, country act Uncas, Tzadeka and the Murder Hornets, Scott Cook and the Outdoorables, Monkeyjunk, Eraser Crow, and Handsome Tiger.
Thursday Opening Acts
The festival opens Thursday with performances by Mya Hill, The McGowan Family Band, hard-rocking Quietus, and the Boom Booms. California's Balkan Bump, blending Balkan brass and electronic beats, will perform late Friday at Reed's Stage, while Handsome Tiger plays at Shady Grove.
Diverse Musical Offerings
Iverson highlights up-and-coming acts like Jed and the Valentine and Marcus Trummor, predicting they'll become future stars. The lineup features late-night dance beats, power fiddle, chill folk, danceable country, and solid metal.
