Edmonton police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with an unprovoked knife attack on a woman walking in the Mill Woods neighborhood.
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred on May 11 at approximately 10:48 p.m. near Knottwood Road and Mill Woods Road. The 24-year-old victim was walking home when she was approached by the suspect, who stabbed her without provocation before fleeing on foot, according to a police news release issued Tuesday.
The suspect was arrested on June 8.
“The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police do not believe that the suspect and victim were known to one another,” the release stated.
Police Response
Const. Andrew Jarvis of the investigative response team expressed relief that the woman’s injuries were not life-threatening and that the suspect was quickly apprehended.
“We are thankful that the woman who was attacked did not sustain life-threatening injuries and that we were able to successfully locate and arrest the male suspect,” Jarvis said. “Everyone has a right to be safe in our city, and we will continue to work closely with members of the public to investigate reported concerns, alongside our proactive policing efforts that are focused on maintaining safety in our shared spaces.”
Charges and Court Appearance
John Cabeza Cuero has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and assault with a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court in Edmonton on June 17.
