Canada's Premier Sports Festival Launches Winter Edition in Calgary
The GOOD Games, celebrated as Canada's largest festival of sport, is making its winter debut in Calgary this weekend, transforming the BMO Centre into a vibrant hub of athletic activity. This inaugural winter event promises to deliver an unprecedented experience for sports enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
A Diverse Celebration of Movement and Inclusion
Originating in Guelph, Ontario, The GOOD Games has built its reputation on bringing together traditional sports, para sports, and Indigenous sports under one roof. Founder and CEO Helen Stoumbos describes the festival as a "sport smorgasbord" where different events, competitions, and showcases occur simultaneously throughout the weekend.
"We've taken over two big convention rooms at the BMO Centre and transformed them into a comprehensive sports experience," Stoumbos explained. "There's truly something for everyone—whether you want to watch elite competitions or try sports you've never experienced before."
Free Access to Elite Competitions and Interactive Zones
From Friday through Sunday, festival-goers will enjoy completely free admission to all events, including:
- Elite-level competitions featuring approximately 500-600 athletes
- Interactive try-it zones with around 30 different sports
- Showcases of both traditional and emerging sports
Attendees can experience everything from sledge hockey and cricket to disc golf, teq-ball, pickleball, volleyball, and even arm wrestling. The festival expects to welcome between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors throughout the weekend.
Highlight Events and International Athletes
One of the weekend's marquee events will be a massive freestyle soccer competition featuring top athletes from around the world. Additionally, the teq-ball tournament will showcase international talent, including Toronto-based player Milan Zsibok, who has competed in Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, and multiple European countries.
"Teq-ball is essentially ping pong and soccer combined," Zsibok described. "You play on a curved table using only your feet and head—no hands allowed. It's an exciting, fast-paced sport that's gaining popularity worldwide."

Stoumbos emphasized that The GOOD Games offers a unique experience that attendees won't find elsewhere. "People consistently tell me they've never seen anything like our event," she said. "You can wander through the festival watching as many sports as you like, then jump in and try them yourself. It's about celebrating movement, inclusion, and the joy of sport."
