Toronto's Patrician Grill Announces Permanent Closure After Nearly Six Decades
Another cherished Toronto institution is preparing to shut its doors for good. The Patrician Grill, a beloved diner that has served the community for 59 years, will close permanently on May 9, 2026. This announcement marks the end of an era for a restaurant that has been a neighborhood favorite since the Pappas family took ownership in 1967.
Owner Announces Closure with Mixed Emotions
In a heartfelt video message shared on Facebook, owner Terry Pappas revealed the difficult decision to close the iconic King Street establishment. Standing alongside his brother-in-law Chris Slifkas inside the diner, Pappas expressed both sadness and gratitude as he shared the news with loyal customers.
"As you know, my parents purchased the Patrician Grill in 1967," said Pappas. "So with mixed emotions and sadness I am announcing that we'll be closing for good. This decision wasn't easy to make."
The restaurant originally opened its doors in 1953 before being sold to the Pappas family fourteen years later. Pappas has been working at the establishment since 1987, while Slifkas joined in 2000 as head chef while Pappas managed front-of-house operations.
Gratitude for Customers and Staff
Both owners took the opportunity to express their deep appreciation for everyone who has supported their business over the decades. Slifkas specifically thanked customers and staff for their loyalty and hard work.
"We wanted to take this time to say thank you to all our customers, past and present, for coming in so frequently," Slifkas added. "We really appreciate you and many of you have become friends and family members over the years. Also, a quick thank you to our staff past and present, as well, for all their hard work and support. We could not have done it without you."
Slifkas encouraged patrons to visit one last time before the May 9 closure date, noting that afterward he plans to focus on golf and spending time with his new granddaughter.
Community Reaction Reflects Bittersweet Sentiment
The announcement has sparked an emotional response from the Toronto community, with many expressing both sadness at the loss and happiness for the owners' retirement.
On Facebook, customer Eva Zoeegrl wrote: "Wow what a milestone! 59 years of Patrician Grill. It must be so bittersweet. So sad to have you close but totally understandable."
Other reactions included:
- Miguel Madeira: "They say good things come to an end, but that doesn't mean I have to like it."
- Susan Pezzack Swinwood: "I knew it was probably coming sooner rather than later but I'm still devastated. You deserve a happy retirement."
- Peter Janigan: "Thanks for all the years of service, Toronto is gone now anyway so not much reason to stick around."
- Angel Narick: "End of an era!!! Saddened to hear of your closing. Though happy you get to enjoy life."
Another Local Institution Lost
The closure of Patrician Grill follows similar recent losses of Toronto landmarks, including the Imperial Pub and Reading Room after 80 years of operation. These closures represent a changing landscape for the city's dining and cultural scene, with long-standing establishments making way for new developments.
The Patrician Grill's nearly six-decade run has created countless memories for generations of Torontonians who frequented the diner for its classic atmosphere and reliable service. As the final day approaches, the restaurant's legacy as a community gathering place will be remembered by those who experienced its unique charm.
