Marilyn Brooks, the celebrated Canadian fashion designer who brought the rebellious Mod style to Canada and was invested into the Order of Canada in 2022, has died at the age of 93. Her death was confirmed by family members on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
A Pioneer of Canadian Fashion
Brooks was best known for popularizing a clothing style inspired by the "Mod" subculture that emerged among rebellious British youths in the 1960s. Her designs featured bold geometric patterns, miniskirts, and bright colours, helping define a generation's look in Canada. She opened her first boutique in Toronto in the 1960s and quickly became a household name.
In recognition of her contributions to Canadian fashion and culture, Brooks was invested as a member of the Order of Canada on November 17, 2022. The ceremony took place at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, where former governor general Michaelle Jean invested her on behalf of then-Governor General Mary Simon. The investiture was captured in a photograph by The Canadian Press.
Legacy and Impact
Brooks's influence extended beyond clothing; she was a mentor to many young designers and an advocate for Canadian fashion on the international stage. Her work is held in collections at the Royal Ontario Museum and the McCord Museum. She is survived by her children and grandchildren. A private funeral will be held in Toronto.
