BAPE Launches First Canadian Store in Vancouver's Luxury District
Vancouver's Alberni Street witnessed a significant fashion milestone last weekend as Japanese streetwear powerhouse A Bathing Ape (BAPE) opened its first Canadian store. The new boutique at 1020 Alberni Street attracted queues of at least thirty eager customers, marking a major retail event in the city's luxury shopping corridor.
From Tokyo to Vancouver: A Streetwear Legacy
Founded in Tokyo in 1993 by designer-DJ-entrepreneur Tomoaki "Nigo" Nagao, BAPE has evolved from underground streetwear phenomenon to global fashion force. Now headquartered in Hong Kong, the brand has become synonymous with colorful graphic tees, patterned hoodies, and celebrity endorsements from Pharrell Williams to Travis Scott and LeBron James.
"From the beginning, we pioneered the idea of cultural drops and essentially the scarcity model that many brands now emulate," explained CEO Mahmoud El Salahy during an exclusive interview. "BAPE stands for fearless expression through art, sports, and music."
Vancouver as Global 'Energy City'
The Vancouver location represents a strategic expansion choice for the brand, which operates over forty retail locations worldwide. El Salahy, speaking via Zoom from Seoul where another new store is opening, revealed why Vancouver made the cut.
"We regard Vancouver as one of the 'energy cities' in the world," El Salahy emphasized. "It represents a beautiful intersection between East and West, carrying multiple cultures and subcultures in nuanced ways. This amalgamation of cultures makes Vancouver a great example of what we look for."
The CEO defined 'energy cities' as global hubs with significant tourism, cultural connectivity, and vibrant subcultures. Vancouver now joins an exclusive list including New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Dubai, and Riyadh in BAPE's strategic expansion plan.
Design and Collection Details
The 3,780-square-foot Vancouver boutique occupies a space previously held by Michaels arts and crafts store, which closed in 2021. The interior design thoughtfully incorporates Vancouver's civic identity through color schemes mirroring the green, white, and blue of the city flag.
"Every major store we open globally features unique design elements," noted El Salahy. The Vancouver location offers the brand's complete merchandise range alongside a special Vancouver camo collection created exclusively for the Canadian market.
Soft Opening Success and Future Outlook
Following a successful soft opening period, the store celebrated its grand opening on March 6. Early customer response has exceeded expectations according to company leadership.
"I was super-happy with the initial results," El Salahy shared enthusiastically. "The feedback has been very, very promising, and all eyes are on our first Canadian boutique as we continue our global expansion."
The Alberni Street location represents more than just another retail outlet—it signifies BAPE's recognition of Vancouver's growing influence in global fashion and culture. As streetwear continues to dominate contemporary fashion, BAPE's Canadian debut positions Vancouver firmly on the international style map.
