Van Gogh and Harris Art Displayed Free in Toronto Before Auction
Van Gogh and Harris Art in Free Toronto Exhibition

Toronto art lovers are getting a rare glimpse of masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Emily Carr, Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, and other members of the Group of Seven in a free public exhibition ahead of a major auction next week.

Cowley Abbott, a gallery located just across from the Art Gallery of Ontario, is hosting the exhibition until next Tuesday. The showcase includes a painting by impressionist pioneer Renoir that has been held by a private collector.

Highlights of the Exhibition

The exhibit features a rare etching by van Gogh, the only one he ever produced, depicting Dr. Paul Gachet, the physician who cared for him in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. This piece is a unique addition to the display.

Ten Canadian artworks from the collection of Beam Canada Inc., previously displayed at The Canadian Club Brand Centre in Windsor, are also on exhibit. Among them is a rare painting by Tom Thomson titled Marsh, Lake Scugog, with an auction estimate of $100,000 to $200,000.

Lawren Harris Masterwork

Comedian Steve Martin, a known collector of Group of Seven founder Lawren Harris's work, may take particular interest in a painting of Lake Superior by Harris. Cowley Abbott describes this piece as his "masterwork". The painting, titled Above Coldwell Bay, North Shore, Lake Superior (Lake Superior Sketch XV), 1925, carries an auction estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.

Equally impressive is a painting titled Wind by Emily Carr, which was displayed at the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario) in 1937.

Auction Details

The auction for these artworks will be held next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Globe and Mail Centre and will be livestreamed at cowleyabbott.ca. This event offers a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire significant pieces of art history.
