An official portrait of Russ Mirasty, Saskatchewan's former lieutenant governor, was unveiled at the Legislative Building in Regina on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. The ceremony took place in the rotunda of the building, attended by dignitaries, family members, and members of the public.
Ceremony highlights
Mirasty served as the 22nd lieutenant governor of Saskatchewan from 2019 to 2024. The portrait, painted by artist Gareth Dillistone, depicts Mirasty in formal attire with a background featuring Saskatchewan's prairie landscape. During the event, current Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre praised Mirasty's service, stating, "Russ Mirasty has been a pillar of our community, embodying the values of integrity and dedication that define our province."
Mirasty's legacy
Mirasty, a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, was the first Indigenous person to hold the office of lieutenant governor in Saskatchewan. His tenure focused on reconciliation, youth empowerment, and community engagement. He also served as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer for over 30 years before his appointment.
The portrait will hang in the Legislative Building alongside those of former lieutenant governors, ensuring his contributions are remembered for generations to come.
