Larry the cat, the Chief Mouser at 10 Downing Street, has now outlasted six British prime ministers, including the latest, Keir Starmer, who resigned on Monday. Larry has been a fixture at the prime minister's residence since February 2011, serving for 15 years through the tenures of David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and now Starmer.
A Tough London Tabby
Larry, originally from Wandsworth, was adopted from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and has become a beloved figure at No. 10. Known for his street-fighting prowess, he has chased off other cats and even a fox that ventured onto the property. According to the Museum of the PM's website, “Larry is well-known to have no time for the other Downing St. moggies. He is a street-fighting cat from Wandsworth. Most of the cats stayed away. And if they ever dared come into his zone, he sent them packing.”
A British Favourite
Larry enjoys mingling with journalists and politicians, including former U.S. President Barack Obama. The British public holds him in high regard, sending gifts and treats daily. No. 10's website states, “He has captured the hearts of the Great British public and the press teams often camped outside the front door. In turn the nation sends him gifts and treats daily.” His duties include greeting guests, inspecting security, and testing antique furniture for napping quality. He also contemplates solutions to the mouse population, which he says is still “in tactical planning stage.”
A Symbol of Stability
While British politics has seen six prime ministers in 10 years, Larry remains a constant presence. His longevity and character have made him a symbol of stability and a beloved figure in the UK. As the country faces political turmoil, Larry the cat continues his faithful service, ensuring no rodent is safe at the heart of His Majesty's government.
