GlobalFest, the annual summer celebration of multiculturalism and fireworks, will relocate from Elliston Park to Spruce Meadows this year. Organizers announced the move to ensure the event's long-term sustainability following declining attendance and limitations at the longtime venue.
Reasons for the Move
Ken Goosen, chief operating officer of GlobalFest, explained that attendance numbers have dropped over the past few years, prompting a need for revitalization. He noted that Elliston Park's space is constrained by a lake, limiting potential growth. The new venue, Spruce Meadows, a world-renowned equestrian centre on Calgary's southwest edge, offers expanded facilities and opportunities for innovation.
Community Impact
The decision has disappointed the International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ), which claims it was blindsided and fears harm to local businesses. GlobalFest had previously partnered with the BRZ to benefit the Forest Lawn area. Goosen stated he informed the BRZ last week, emphasizing the strategic nature of the move.
Attendance and History
The five-day August event has drawn between 54,000 and 110,000 attendees annually. GlobalFest originated in 1993 as the Calgary Fireworks Festival Society, finding an ideal pyrotechnics site at Elliston Park in 2001. It partnered with the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre and launched in 2003 with 10 multicultural pavilions and three pyromusical teams. Last year, four countries besides Canada participated.
Like many festivals, GlobalFest has faced financial challenges. Organizers describe the move as a tough but necessary decision to streamline operations and secure the festival's future. More details are expected to follow.
