B.C. Sports Hall of Fame Forced to Close During FIFA World Cup, Losing Opportunity
B.C. Sports Hall of Fame Shuts for FIFA World Cup

The B.C. Sports Hall of Fame is facing a significant setback as it is required to shut down for two months starting May 14 during the FIFA World Cup, a period when Vancouver's downtown core will be bustling with soccer fans. The hall, located inside B.C. Place, will be closed from May 14 through July, leaving six staff members without work during that time. Unlike the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, when the hall was only closed on game days and received a standard day rate rental from FIFA, this time there is no financial compensation for the closure.

Missed Opportunity for Engagement

Curator Jason Beck expressed deep disappointment, calling it a 'massive missed opportunity.' He noted that the hall could have themed exhibits around soccer to attract the captive audience of sports fans visiting the city. 'Whether we themed the Hall of Fame around soccer or not, you have a captive audience there,' Beck said. He added that as a sports fan himself, he always seeks out local halls of fame or sports museums when traveling, and believes many others do the same.

Beck has received numerous inquiries from organizations wanting to collaborate on exhibitions or host talks during the World Cup, but none of these can be pursued because he and the other staff are all taking layoffs to cut costs. 'We can't do any of that now,' he lamented.

FIFA Exclusivity and Staff Impact

The closure is due to FIFA having full exclusivity over B.C. Place from May 14 until the tournament concludes in July. The hall will reportedly be used as a media centre during the World Cup. The first match at B.C. Place is scheduled for June 13, with Australia facing Turkey, followed by Canada versus Qatar on June 18.

Beck praised PavCo, the Crown corporation that operates B.C. Place, for attempting to find creative solutions, but acknowledged that no financial assistance could be offered. He has been working closely with B.C. Place assistant general manager Jenna Visram, whom he described as extremely busy but always prioritizing his concerns.

Requests for comment from FIFA have not been answered. PavCo provided a written statement confirming FIFA's exclusivity over the stadium during the tournament.
