YESfest 2026 is set to bring a powerhouse roster of Canadian and Windsor-based comedians for a weekend of improv comedy performances and free professional workshops at the KordaZone Theatre on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18. The festival, now in its second year, builds on the sold-out inaugural run in 2025, according to Eric Miinch, president of Windsor Improv Theatre.
Headliners and Reunion Set
YESfest 2026 headliners include actor and writer Reid Janisse, known for the cult comedy Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie; comedian Chelsea Larkin from I Was Honey Boo Boo; and actor and director Josh Murray, who recently won the Toronto Improv Tournament with The Musical Puppet Collective. The festival will also feature a reunion set from Windsor’s own Cheeky Monkeys, the 90s improv troupe that laid the groundwork for Windsor’s comedy scene, as well as Chris Moody from Go Comedy! Improv Theatre and Planet Ant in Michigan.
Growing Demand for Improv
“We had a really, really successful first year,” Miinch said. “Improv in the city has sort of blown up. We were the only group a few years ago and now I think there are five or six groups that are producing shows (and) there’s a couple teaching classes. So, there’s a demand for it.” Miinch noted that participants are seeking an “analogue experience” — something tactile and participatory, not computer-generated. “It’s an experience, it’s approachable, and it’s something that will change the way you approach yourself,” he added. “It’s cheaper than therapy and it’s more in person than watching Instagram Reels.”
Festival Schedule
The festival kicks off Friday, July 17 at 8 p.m. with the Kickoff Bucket Show, described as “pure unscripted chaos.” Audience and performer names go into a bucket, names are drawn at random, and local players mix with celebrity guests on stage. Local improv troupes are also invited to perform. On Saturday, July 18, two pay-what-you-can workshops will be held: from 12–2 p.m., Reid Janisse leads “Unlocking the HOW: Creating Fast Characters and Dynamic Scenes,” teaching participants to instantly discover bold characters and build high-energy scenes. From 3–5 p.m., Chelsea Larkin and Eric Miinch lead “Improv with Friends,” focusing on ensemble building, supporting scene partners, and finding shared comedic chemistry.
