Vancouver's Festive Choir Guide: Holiday Concerts 2025

As December approaches, Vancouver transforms into a hub for choral music enthusiasts. While various musical treats abound during the holiday season, it's the rich, layered sound of choirs that truly defines the city's festive soundscape. Concert-goers face an delightful array of choices, from timeless classics to modern compositions, and from grand, orchestral events to more intimate musical gatherings.

Kicking Off the Festive Season

The festive programming begins even before December. The Elektra Women's Choir ushers in the spirit of Advent with its cherished production, Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra. This year's performances are particularly notable as they mark the first under the baton of new music director Cassie Luftspring. Audiences can experience the celebration on November 29 at 7:30 p.m. and November 30 at 3 p.m. at the acoustically beloved Pacific Spirit United Church in Kerrisdale.

Grand Baroque and Family Extravaganzas

The first weekend of December brings a monumental offering from the Vancouver Bach Choir. On Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m., the choir will present J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio in its entirety at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church. Conducted by Leslie Dala, the performance will feature soloists and a full orchestra, bringing the German master's magnificent seasonal work to life.

The musical festivities continue the very next day with the Vancouver Bach Choir's annual family concert. On Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m., the historic Orpheum theatre will resonate with the sound of nearly 500 voices. This massive event will involve five conductors, multiple pianists, and be accompanied by organ and brass, creating a truly spectacular holiday experience.

The Tradition of Handel's Messiah

A respected tradition in Vancouver's music scene sees the major ensembles take turns presenting Handel's Messiah each December. This year, the honor goes to Early Music Vancouver. Their production will feature a roster of soloists, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and the Vancouver Chamber Choir.

There are two opportunities to catch this beloved oratorio. A performance is scheduled for Thursday, December 12 at Fraserview Mennonite Church in Richmond, followed by a show at the Orpheum on Friday, December 13. Both concerts begin at 7:00 p.m., allowing ample time for an early dinner before enjoying the substantial performance.

For those willing to travel beyond the city, conductor Paula DeWit and the Chilliwack Symphony will present the Advent portion of Messiah in several locations, including Chilliwack, Aldergrove, and Surrey. A special performance is also set for Friday, December 6 at 2 p.m. at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver.

With such a diverse and rich schedule, Vancouver's choral scene offers a perfect harmony of tradition and celebration for every music lover this holiday season.
