In a recent and candid interview, Grammy-winning artist Usher has publicly expressed his support for Sean "Diddy" Combs, the embattled music mogul currently serving a 50-month prison sentence. Usher, 47, argues that Combs has been "misrepresented" and deserves recognition for his profound impact on the industry.
Usher's Controversial Stance on Diddy's Legacy
During a March 20 conversation with Forbes' The Enterprise Zone, Usher was asked to describe Combs with a single word. He responded with "Legacy," acknowledging that his perspective might be viewed as "a bit controversial" given the circumstances. However, the "Let It Burn" singer insisted that "we can't ignore the reality of the history" when evaluating Combs' career.
"I don't have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he's been misrepresented," Usher explained. He emphasized that while no one is perfect, it's essential to acknowledge Combs' valuable contributions.
Recognizing Entrepreneurial and Cultural Impact
Usher elaborated on Combs' influence, particularly within the Black community. "I can't with any sense of humanity not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who have transitioned culture and ideas into something that's tangible," he stated. Usher believes that "certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer."
A Decades-Long Professional Relationship
Usher and Sean "Diddy" Combs have maintained both a professional relationship and personal friendship for over three decades. Usher began working with Combs as a teenager, and he credits the mogul with shaping his understanding of business long before he fully grasped the concept.
Referring to Combs by his former nickname "Puff," Usher described him as "a mentor" and compared him to a "really, really hard teacher." He added, "That's who I see that man as. And that's what I choose to remember. I put respect on his name because I realized that what I learned as a businessman before I even understood what business was came as a result of seeing the incredible things that he was able to do."
Legal Troubles and Current Status
Sean "Diddy" Combs' legal issues have been extensive. He was sued by dozens of individuals accusing him of sexual misconduct, allegations he has consistently denied. In October 2025, a federal judge sentenced him to 50 months in prison after convictions on two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution. His release date was later adjusted to April 2028.
Previously, in September 2024, Combs was indicted on charges including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He was ultimately acquitted of the most severe charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.
Despite these controversies, Usher remains steadfast in his support, highlighting the broader benefits Combs provided to many in the music world. "So many people benefitted from what he created," Usher noted, underscoring the lasting legacy he believes Combs has forged.
