Tony Awards 2026: 'Lost Boys' and 'Schmigadoon!' Lead

The Tony Awards nominations were announced Tuesday, with The Lost Boys and Schmigadoon! each leading the pack with 12 nominations. The ceremony also made history as June Squibb, at 96, became the oldest Tony-nominated actor ever, while Danny Burstein set a new record for the most-nominated male actor.

Top Nominees

The Lost Boys, an adaptation of the 1987 teen vampire film, and Schmigadoon!, a parody of Broadway musicals based on the Apple TV series, were closely followed by a revival of Ragtime with 11 nods and Death of a Salesman, starring Nathan Lane, with nine. Twenty-four shows received at least one nomination across 26 categories, including revivals of Chess and Cats: The Jellicle Ball, the latter reimagining the feline classic as a queer ballroom celebration.

Bill Rauch, co-director of Cats: The Jellicle Ball, expressed his excitement: "I'm over the Jellicle moon about this! I've spent my whole career trying to connect the dots between classics and the place and time we're living in."

Best New Musical and Play

The best new musical nominees are The Lost Boys, Schmigadoon!, Titanique, and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). Ali Louis Bourzgui, nominated for his role in The Lost Boys, said: "People love a villain they can care for. I think that's the most interesting kind of character."

For best new play, nominees include Giant with John Lithgow, Liberation, The Balusters, and Little Bear Ridge Road. Playwright Mark Rosenblatt noted the relevance of Giant, which explores antisemitism: "The pain in the play is perennial."
