Before Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce officially tie the knot this summer, the two are rumored to be putting the finishing touches on a prenuptial agreement to protect one another's assets in case their marriage goes south. According to a report published by TMZ, where they file the document could vary significantly.
Prenup Filing Location Matters
Picking a state where the prenup is drafted will be just as important as picking out a wedding venue, the website states. The laws governing prenuptial agreements vary from state to state, and these prenups typically say the law of the state where it is written will apply, regardless of where they end up living.
Swift is reportedly worth more than $2 billion, while Kelce, who plays tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, has a net worth of around $90 million. The duo owns properties across the U.S., including homes in Rhode Island, New York, California, Florida, Tennessee, Kansas, and Missouri.
TMZ speculates that the couple will want to file their prenup in a state that gives courts less leeway to rewrite agreements and does not dole out long-term spousal support. The celebrity website suggests that New York will likely be the worst state for the couple to file in due to its judges being known for invalidating prenup agreements. Rhode Island gets the likely nod due to its track record for enforcing prearranged agreements.
Legal Expert Weighs In
Attorney Sarah Luetto told Page Six that Swift could be on the hook for covering Kelce's living expenses due to her extreme wealth. When one party is worth significantly more than the other, prenuptial agreements frequently provide that the wealthier party will pay all of the couple's living expenses while the less wealthy party preserves their separate estate, Luetto, partner in Blank Rome's Matrimonial & Family Law Group, told the outlet this week.
Fan Reactions on Social Media
On X, as reports of the prenup news made the rounds, Swifties said the pop star was right in trying to protect what is hers in case the two break up. One fan wrote, "Girl better get that prenup!! She has more to lose if something goes wrong." Another observed, "It's weird how fast something emotional gets translated into spreadsheets and property law once money and fame are involved." A third weighed in, "It just shows how even the biggest celebrity relationships get reduced to headlines about contracts instead of the actual relationship."
One commenter said they were not surprised the pair is drafting a marriage contract. "Most people will never do it, but you have to have that talk with your partner if something went south," they wrote. "What would the expectations be and what's what? It's almost the same as the death talk."
Political Commentary
Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine weighed in on the drama, telling TMZ the two were spending too much time debating a prenuptial agreement. "I like Taylor Swift only because — I'm not a big Taylor Swift music fan — but I'm a Chiefs fan," the Virginian told TMZ this week. "What's not to like? But if you're spending too much time thinking about the prenup before the wedding, hmm."
Swift's Influence on Kelce's Career
After some speculation that he might retire at the end of last season, Kelce announced he had agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract with the Chiefs. The three-time Super Bowl champion credited Swift with motivating him to return. "We share the same love for what we do," Kelce said on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show in March. "Fortunately, we've had this desire since we were kids in our selective professions. It's amazing to see her keep going to the table, keep finding new things to write about, keep finding new melodies and things like that. On top of that, still seeing her have that love and joy in what she does."
Watching how she approaches her career is motivating, he continued. "That's motivating for anybody, let alone my fiancée. I'm going through something trying to figure out what exactly the future holds for me. Something like that definitely motivates me to say, 'You know what, I'm not done either. I've still got some ideas in the back of my mind. I've still got some juice left to play this game.'"
