Sydney Sweeney Faces Box Office Knockout
Sydney Sweeney, one of Hollywood's most discussed actors, is experiencing a significant box office losing streak that has industry analysts concerned. Her latest project, the Christy Martin biopic titled "Christy," has delivered what might be her most disappointing performance to date.
The film managed to gross only $1.3 million during its opening weekend despite being released in 2,011 theaters across the United States. This poor performance places the movie among the top 10 worst theatrical openings of all time for films playing on more than 2,000 screens, according to industry tracking service Box Office Mojo.
A Pattern of Underperformance
This isn't an isolated incident for the Euphoria star. Sweeney's recent theatrical releases have consistently underperformed at the box office. The crime heist film "Americana," which was completed in 2023 but delayed until this year, earned a mere $500,000 during its August debut weekend across 1,123 theaters.
Another August release, the Ron Howard-directed thriller "Eden" from 2024, fared only slightly better with a total cinema run of just $1.57 million. The decimal point placement is accurate, highlighting the severity of the film's commercial failure.
Controversy and Future Projects
Beyond her box office challenges, Sweeney has found herself embroiled in several controversies. Her American Eagle jeans commercial featuring references to her "good genes" drew criticism from those who claimed it subtly promoted white supremacy themes. The situation intensified when former President Donald Trump commented, "If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic" after learning about her political affiliation.
During an appearance on "The Late Show" last week, Sweeney raised eyebrows by admitting she went skydiving just hours after spending the entire night barhopping. When host Stephen Colbert asked if she showed up still drunk, Sweeney replied, "I was a little worried stuff would come out, yeah. I would not be the only thing falling out of the sky."
Despite these setbacks, industry insiders predict Sweeney's fortunes may improve with upcoming projects. The thriller "The Housemaid," co-starring Amanda Seyfried, is scheduled for December release. Additionally, rumors suggest she has secured a role in the "Devil Wears Prada" sequel, scheduled for May release, after being spotted on the film's set.
Sweeney's representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding her recent box office performances and the various controversies surrounding the actor.
