Authorities in Costa Rica have confirmed the tragic death of Kurt Van Dyke, a 66-year-old surfing legend from California, in what appears to be a violent home invasion robbery. The incident occurred over the weekend in the Caribbean coastal town of Cahuita, sparking an investigation by the country's Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ).
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to OIJ spokesperson Carlos Valverde, Van Dyke was discovered dead on Saturday under a bed in his apartment. Preliminary reports indicate that two armed men, carrying at least one firearm, forcibly entered the residence. They threatened both Van Dyke and his 31-year-old girlfriend during the robbery.
The girlfriend managed to escape with minor injuries after being restrained with zip ties by the assailants. She reported that the thieves stole valuables from the home, including a vehicle, before fleeing the scene. Van Dyke, however, did not survive the attack.
Cause of Death Under Investigation
Valverde stated in an official release that Van Dyke died from asphyxiation and sustained multiple stab wounds. The case remains active as authorities await autopsy results to determine the precise cause of death. The OIJ is continuing its probe into the circumstances surrounding the robbery and homicide.
Legacy of a Surfing Icon
Kurt Van Dyke hailed from a prominent surfing family in California and was widely regarded as a legend within the surfing community. His late mother, Betty Van Dyke, was a trailblazer who advocated for greater inclusion of women in surfing. His father, Gene Van Dyke, was also a notable surfer in northern California, as reported by The Associated Press.
In addition to his surfing achievements, Van Dyke owned a budget-friendly hotel in nearby Puerto Viejo, which was popular among tourists. His brother, Peter Van Dyke, shared heartfelt memories with the San Francisco Chronicle, describing Kurt as a benevolent and generous person who was always willing to help others.
"My brother was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody," Peter Van Dyke said. "Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him. Everyone that he met knew this about him."
The surfing world mourns the loss of Kurt Van Dyke, whose contributions to the sport and community will be remembered fondly. As the investigation progresses, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing justice for this senseless crime.
