Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem received a ruff reception online Tuesday after an attempted clapback at a Democratic senator saw critics digging up a controversial moment from her past.
Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) had shared a photo on X of herself cuddling a puppy with the caption: “Don’t worry buddy, Kristi Noem isn’t around anymore.”
It was a clear nod to Noem’s admission in her book “No Going Back” that she shot dead her 14-month-old wirehaired pointer named Cricket because of his bad behavior. Noem, now special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, hit back bizarrely.
“Oh but I am…And I love puppies,” she wrote on X, adding a heart emoji. She then added: “You…? …not so much.”
The response quickly backfired, with critics unleashing a howl of reminders:
- “You ‘love’ them? As target practice?” — @Ima ?????
- “One could say you love them to death.” — @Double_Anarchy
- “Yeah, you just love them to death, don’t you?” — @Mr. K
- “You love them to death. Right Kristi?” — @PJ??????
- “Love them to death?” — @Common Sense
- “Cricket remembers.” — @dawn a-n??
