Melissa Gilbert Stands by Husband Timothy Busfield in Child Abuse Allegations
Actress Melissa Gilbert has spoken out in defense of her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, who is currently facing serious criminal charges related to child sexual abuse. In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Gilbert addressed the allegations and expressed her unwavering support for Busfield, emphasizing her belief in his innocence.
Background of the Case and Previous Allegations
Timothy Busfield, best known for his roles in television series such as The West Wing and Thirtysomething, pleaded not guilty earlier this year to four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under the age of 13. This is not the first time Busfield has faced such accusations; he previously settled a sexual assault allegation from 1994 involving a 17-year-old and faced another accusation of inappropriate touching in 2012, though prosecutors declined to pursue that case due to insufficient evidence.
Gilbert, 61, married to Busfield since April 2013, stated that she was fully aware of these past allegations before their marriage. "When Tim and I got together, the internet existed. I didn't go into my relationship blind. I'm neither naive nor am I complicit," she told interviewer George Stephanopoulos. She added that Busfield has shared his side of the story with her, which she believes to be the truth, and that he plans to address these past allegations publicly when the time is right.
Recent Allegations and Impact on Their Lives
The most recent charges stem from Busfield's work as a director on the TV series The Cleaning Lady from 2022 to 2024. According to reports from The Associated Press, a child actor alleged that Busfield touched him multiple times when he was seven and eight years old, leading to diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. The child's twin brother also reported similar incidents.
In response, Busfield has vehemently denied these accusations, calling them "lies" in a video shared with TMZ and stating, "I did not do anything to those little boys, and I'm going to fight it." He suggested that the boys' mother might be motivated by retaliation after he replaced the children on the series.
Gilbert described the profound impact these charges have had on their lives, saying, "Our life as we knew it is done. We are grieving what we had. All of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects." She lamented that even if exonerated, Busfield's reputation may be permanently tarnished, labeling him as "cancelled" in the public eye.
Gilbert's Personal Testimony and Legal Statements
Gilbert passionately defended her husband's character, stating, "I know this man in my bones... He is nothing if not completely honest with me. I trust him with my children's lives, with my grandchildren's lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honourable, caring, generous human being." She asserted that if she believed Busfield had harmed a child, he would have more to worry about than prison.
Busfield's civil lawyer, Larry Stein, provided a statement to Us Weekly, criticizing the parents of the alleged victims by highlighting their criminal backgrounds, including fraud and theft charges. Stein expressed hope that further media coverage would clarify these aspects of the case.
Gilbert explained that she is speaking out to combat what she calls "untruths" in the case and expressed confidence that Busfield will be exonerated. His trial is scheduled for next year, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold amidst intense public scrutiny.
