First lady Melania Trump reportedly objected to Elon Musk sleeping under the same roof at the White House, according to the Daily Beast, citing the new book Regime Change. The book recounts that then-DOGE head Elon Musk asked President Donald Trump if he could stay overnight, and Trump agreed. However, Melania did not consent.
Her objection was overruled, and Musk spent several nights in the Lincoln Bedroom. The book, written by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swift of The New York Times, also notes that on other nights, Musk stayed with friends, though he told associates he sometimes used a sleeping bag on the floor of his office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Musk's Account of White House Stays
Musk has previously stated that it was Trump who invited him to stay and gave him a tour of the Lincoln Bedroom, encouraging him to get ice cream from the kitchen. "He's actually a very good host," Musk said.
The relationship between Trump and Musk has since cooled. Their public feuding erupted in 2025 over Musk's criticism of Trump's "big, beautiful bill," but by early 2026, Musk indicated repair work was underway, sharing a photo of himself dining with the president and first lady at Mar-a-Lago.
Financial Ties Through SpaceX IPO
The two are also loosely connected through a recent stock venture. The initial public offering of Musk's SpaceX reportedly was expected to reap financial gain for many in the Trump administration. The IPO helped turn Musk into a trillionaire, though the stock price has since fallen.
