Howie Mandel Clashes with Kelly Ripa Over Age Comments in Tense TV Interview

Talk about tension you could cut with a knife. Things turned painfully awkward between comedian Howie Mandel and talk show host Kelly Ripa during Monday's episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, creating a viral moment that has viewers buzzing.

An Unexpectedly Tense Exchange

The segment began innocently enough with Ripa and her husband, co-host Mark Consuelos, expressing their disbelief at Mandel's age. The 70-year-old comedian, however, was not amused by their comments.

"It doesn't make any sense," Ripa, 55, began, before Mandel immediately interrupted her, demanding, "What do you mean it doesn't make any sense?"

When Consuelos, 54, attempted to smooth things over by telling Mandel he looks great, the comedian responded curtly, "That I look great? No. That doesn't mean anything to me."

Mandel Takes Offense at Backhanded Compliments

The couple tried to defuse the situation, but Mandel was already offended and blasted the hosts for what he perceived as a backhanded compliment.

"No. No. No," he told the couple. "I don't like that because that's a caveat. When you tell someone you're 70, and they go, 'you look great'..."

Ripa interjected, trying to assure the America's Got Talent judge that wasn't their intention. "We're not saying you look great for 70," she clarified. "We're saying you look great and I don't believe you're 70."

Mandel, however, refused to back down and explained why he found their comments so insulting. "No. No. It's like saying 'you're smart for a stupid person,'" he said. "'Oh, you seem smart, you seem smart,' you see, no, I don't look good."

The Awkward Atmosphere and Eventual Resolution

Consuelos continued to challenge Mandel, insisting the comedian does "look good," while Ripa's face was visibly scrunched up in confusion, as if she wasn't sure what would happen next.

Thankfully, the tension didn't last forever. Mandel eventually did a complete 180 and attempted to lighten the mood as he jokingly agreed he looks "gorgeous," before sharing the workout routine that has helped deliver his age-defying results.

Mandel Reveals His Unusual Fitness Secret

"Your friend, [actor] Jerry O'Connell, got me into the most ridiculous workout I've ever done in my life," he revealed.

The comedian detailed his unusual exercise regimen: "I swim but have these cables which I tie onto my ankles and then I attach them to whatever is at the side of the pool. Then he gave me these frying pan paddles and I swim for an hour and go nowhere," he exclaimed, adding that he gets "so lost in it."

Mandel said he even takes the equipment everywhere when traveling for work, joking that he's scared a few kids in hotel pools with his unconventional swimming technique.

Ripa joked, while presumably breathing an inward sigh of relief: "You're doing everything we've trained children not to do in a pool."

The entire exchange, which aired on March 25, 2026, showcased the unpredictable nature of live television interviews, where even seemingly innocent comments about age can spark unexpected tension before eventually resolving with humor and personal revelations.
