Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time," made a lighthearted offer to President Donald Trump on Friday, proposing $1 million to keep him away from Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday. Maher, a New York native and Knicks fan, referenced Trump's attendance at Game 3, which resulted in a Knicks loss, breaking their 13-game playoff winning streak.
Maher's Offer and Clarification
"Game 5 is tomorrow night, and Trump is not going. He went to Game 3, and they lost," Maher said. "The Knicks had a 13-game winning streak in the playoffs, that's almost unheard of. Then he went, they lost. I'm not saying he made them lose, I am saying I'm offering a million dollars not to go to this game."
Maher quickly clarified that the offer was a joke to avoid potential legal trouble. "That's a joke by the way," he added. "Please, that is a joke, because last time I offered money like that, I got sued."
Reference to Past Lawsuit
The comment alluded to a 2013 lawsuit Trump filed against Maher after the comedian jokingly offered $5 million to charity if Trump could prove his father was not an orangutan. Trump eventually dropped the lawsuit.
Maher's jest comes amid ongoing tensions between the two public figures, with Maher frequently criticizing Trump on his show.
