In a letter to the editor published June 28, 2026, reader Philip Adams of North York expressed outrage over the end of Hockey Night in Canada on CBC, following the conclusion of the partnership between Rogers Sportsnet and the public broadcaster. Adams called the decision “shameful” and “preposterous.”
End of an era for Saturday night hockey
Adams wrote in response to Rob Longley’s June 16 article about the end of the CBC-Rogers partnership for NHL broadcasts. He recalled his first memory of watching NHL hockey on CBC in the early 1950s, lying on his grandmother’s couch with his father. Now 75, he said Saturday night hockey belongs on CBC and criticized Rogers and CBC for failing to reach a compromise. He noted that the NHL is thriving and called the decision “shockingly pathetic” given Rogers’ billions in value.
Adams suggested that CBC’s plan to fill the void with Olympic coverage is insufficient, as the Olympics occur only every two years, leaving “a whole lot of filler programming.” He sarcastically proposed that billionaire Elon Musk could help Rogers’ bottom line.
Satirical suggestion for Trump and the Gordie Howe bridge
In a separate letter, Paul Reidt offered a satirical solution to the delayed opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Reidt claimed that the Trump administration prolonged the bridge’s opening for political reasons related to tariff wars. He suggested that officials should have told U.S. President Donald Trump he would receive the first-ever bridge opening Nobel Prize and a parade across the bridge with him leading the way. Reidt concluded, “Problem solved. You’re welcome.”
