Lainey Wilson Opens Up About Her '14-Year Overnight Success' Journey
Lainey Wilson on Her '14-Year Overnight Success' Journey

Country singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson, known for her authentic storytelling and down-to-earth persona, is opening up about her rise to fame, which she describes as a '14-year overnight success.' In a recent interview, Wilson discussed her journey from a small town in Louisiana to becoming one of country music's biggest stars, including a full-circle moment with her childhood idol Tim McGraw.

The Letter to Tim McGraw

Wilson's Netflix documentary, Lainey Wilson: Keepin' Country Cool, features a poignant scene where she reads a letter she wrote to fellow Louisianian Tim McGraw when she was a teenager. In the letter, Wilson, then 18, introduces herself as a nursing student at Louisiana Delta Community College but emphasizes that 'singing, writing and performing are the most important things in my life.' She included a CD of her songs and proposed a meeting with McGraw. McGraw did not respond at the time.

Earlier this month, Wilson finally met McGraw backstage at the CM Fest in Nashville, where they performed his 1995 hit 'I Like It, I Love It' together. According to People magazine, McGraw was embarrassed about never responding to Wilson's letter and wrote a response to give to her backstage.

A Full-Circle Moment

'He grew up right down the road from me, like 10 miles down the road,' Wilson said in an interview with Postmedia. 'My very first concert was the Down on the Farm tour, and my mama took me and my sister in a little double stroller. I got to see that a dude from that area did it. I got to see that, if I wanted to, I could chase a dream just like he did.' Wilson noted that McGraw's journey from northeast Louisiana, a town of 170 people, to stardom inspired her to pursue her own dreams.

Now, Wilson is in a similar position to McGraw's 15 years ago. She has earned multiple No. 1 hits, a Grammy, and has been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. She has also been named Entertainer of the Year twice by the Country Music Association (CMA).

Inspiring the Next Generation

Wilson's story serves as a role model for young hopefuls. When told that a 13-year-old local singer-songwriter cited her as an inspiration during a Country Thunder 2025 preview interview, Wilson said, 'That means a lot. It means that I have people watching, which is a good thing and a scary thing, and it also holds me accountable. I want people to see my journey.'

The '14-Year Overnight Success'

Wilson, who was scheduled to headline Country Thunder Alberta before the festival was cancelled, has always been open about her path to success. Her Netflix documentary, released in April, offers an intimate look at her early struggles, mental-health challenges, and her fairy-tale romance with former NFL quarterback Devlin 'Duck' Hodges. In the film, Wilson addresses the misconception that she achieved overnight success, stating, 'I've been here 14 years, so a 14-year overnight success. I spent a decade being the one you didn't see coming.'

Wilson's journey from writing letters to her idol to performing alongside him underscores the perseverance and authenticity that have defined her career. As she continues to inspire fans and aspiring musicians, her story remains a testament to the power of chasing one's dreams, no matter how long it takes.
