Amid reports that Tom Hardy's future on the Paramount+ series 'MobLand' is uncertain, his co-star Helen Mirren has publicly expressed her support. The Oscar-winning actress, 80, took to Instagram to share a photo of Hardy with the caption: 'Love you now and always, Helen.'
Background on the Controversy
According to reports from Matthew Belloni's 'What I'm Hearing' newsletter and Variety, Hardy was allegedly fired from the series after filming wrapped on Season 2 in March. Sources cited issues with executive producer and writer Jez Butterworth, 101 Studios, and others. A person close to the production told The Hollywood Reporter that Hardy's behavior was 'career suicide,' claiming he refused to leave his trailer for hours, keeping cast members including Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren waiting.
However, other sources suggested that Hardy's concerns were creative. An insider told Variety that Hardy took issue with Butterworth delivering scripts late and not being present on set. 'Often his ideas are very sound, and he wants them taken seriously,' the source said. 'Jez kind of hasn't got the time to deal with those notes, so it becomes problematic.'
Hardy's Future on the Show
Despite the reports, insiders told Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that Hardy has not been officially fired and could return for a potential third season. 'Tom was not fired, the door is not closed for Season 3, and things are being worked through creatively,' a source close to production told Variety.
In the series, Hardy plays Harry Da Souza, a ruthless fixer for a London crime family led by Mirren and Brosnan. The show became a hit after its March 2025 premiere, drawing 8.8 million viewers in its first week. Paramount renewed it for a second season, calling it a 'resounding triumph.'
Hardy's Past On-Set Issues
This is not the first time Hardy has faced reports of difficult behavior. While filming 'Mad Max: Fury Road' in 2015, he clashed with co-star Charlize Theron. Director George Miller later attributed the tension to their characters' animosity. Patrick Stewart also described Hardy as 'odd' during the filming of 'Star Trek: Nemesis' in 2002, recalling that Hardy kept to himself and didn't socialize. However, Stewart later expressed delight that Hardy proved him wrong with a successful career.
'MobLand' Season 1 is currently streaming on Paramount+. A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
