Stephen Colbert experienced a role reversal on Wednesday's second-to-last episode of "The Late Show" as a lineup of celebrities turned his regular "Colbert Questionert" segment back on him. The segment, typically used by Colbert to interview famous guests with a set of quirky questions, became the host's own interrogation.
De Niro's Turn to Ask
When Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, a vocal critic of Donald Trump, was given the chance to ask Colbert a standard Questionert query, he posed a simple but pointed question: "What number were you thinking of?"
Colbert offered an elaborate response, explaining the history of the question. He noted that when guests answer incorrectly, he says "no," but when they get it right—as Meryl Streep and Ethan Hawke did—he confirms. "Ethan Hawke goes immediately, 'I know what it is. It's three.' That's the number I was thinking of," Colbert said.
De Niro paused and then delivered the punchline: "OK. Because I thought it would have been two million point five, or two and a half million. That's the number of Epstein files Trump still hasn't released."
The audience erupted in laughter and applause.
Other Celebrities Participate
The segment featured other celebrities who also turned the tables on Colbert, making for a memorable send-off as the show nears its end. The moment highlighted De Niro's ongoing criticism of Trump and his ability to weave political commentary into a lighthearted segment.
