Joseph Savarino, the 26-year-old grandson of iconic Duke University basketball coach Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, has been charged with driving while impaired following a tragic collision that claimed the life of a teenage boy in Durham, North Carolina. The incident occurred on Saturday night when Savarino's SUV struck a 15-year-old riding an e-bike at a local intersection.

The juvenile victim was pronounced dead at the scene according to the Durham Police Department's official news release. Court documents obtained by local media reveal that Savarino's breathalyzer test, administered around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, showed a blood alcohol content of 0.11 - significantly above North Carolina's legal limit of 0.08.
Savarino admitted to police that he had been drinking before operating his vehicle. Following his arrest, his bail was set at $100,000, which he posted on Monday. She revealed that her son had been on "his usual afternoon bike ride with friends" when the tragic accident occurred as he was returning to their neighborhood. "Jesus took him immediately," she wrote, expressing the family's struggle to comprehend why his life was cut so short while finding solace in their faith.
"We will never understand why his time here was so short or why he was needed so soon, but we have to hold onto our faith that he is now our angel," the grieving mother continued. "We are better people because of him, and we will carry him with us always."
