Grandson of Legendary Duke Coach Faces DWI Charges in Fatal Teen Crash
Joseph Savarino, the 26-year-old grandson of iconic Duke University basketball coach Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, has been charged with driving while impaired following a tragic collision that claimed the life of a teenage boy in Durham, North Carolina. The incident occurred on Saturday night when Savarino's SUV struck a 15-year-old riding an e-bike at a local intersection.
Fatal Details and Legal Proceedings
The juvenile victim was pronounced dead at the scene according to the Durham Police Department's official news release. Court documents obtained by local media reveal that Savarino's breathalyzer test, administered around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, showed a blood alcohol content of 0.11 - significantly above North Carolina's legal limit of 0.08.
Savarino admitted to police that he had been drinking before operating his vehicle. Following his arrest, his bail was set at $100,000, which he posted on Monday. As part of the legal proceedings, he surrendered his driver's license for a minimum of 30 days and is scheduled to appear in court on May 20.
Family History of DWI Incidents
This is not the first DWI incident involving Coach Krzyzewski's family. In 2021, Savarino's brother Michael, then a 20-year-old guard on the Duke basketball team, was charged with driving while impaired after being pulled over for a stop sign violation. His breathalyzer registered exactly 0.08, the legal threshold in North Carolina.
In that previous incident, current Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero - then a Duke freshman - was in the back seat of the vehicle and faced charges of aiding and abetting DWI. Michael Savarino's license was revoked for 30 days following that violation.
Heartbroken Family Mourns Their Son
The victim's mother, Allison Bickel O'Shea, shared her family's profound grief in a heartfelt Facebook post, describing their "unfathomable sadness" following the loss of their "perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome baby boy Jack."
She revealed that her son had been on "his usual afternoon bike ride with friends" when the tragic accident occurred as he was returning to their neighborhood. "Jesus took him immediately," she wrote, expressing the family's struggle to comprehend why his life was cut so short while finding solace in their faith.
"We will never understand why his time here was so short or why he was needed so soon, but we have to hold onto our faith that he is now our angel," the grieving mother continued. "We are better people because of him, and we will carry him with us always."
Ongoing Investigation
The Durham Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal weekend collision. This tragic incident has drawn significant attention due to the prominent basketball legacy of the accused driver's family, highlighting the devastating consequences of impaired driving regardless of family connections or social status.
