One of the editorial cartoonists whose work is regularly featured in the Calgary Herald has earned a prestigious international honor. Patrick LaMontagne has been awarded third place in the 26th International Editorial Cartoon Contest, organized by World Press Freedom Canada.
The award holds special significance as it comes from an organization dedicated to advocating for press freedom worldwide. LaMontagne's winning entry depicts a battered Earth sitting in a boxing ring, capturing the competition's theme, 'Times are tough.'
Recognition for Two Decades of Work
LaMontagne, who has been creating editorial cartoons for over two decades, expressed his appreciation for the recognition. 'It's always meaningful to have the work recognized, especially in a contest focused on press freedom,' he said. Entries for the competition were submitted from around the globe, and the winners were announced at an awards luncheon last week.
World Press Freedom Canada highlighted the importance of editorial cartoons, stating, 'Editorial cartoons serve as a vital form of journalistic expression, using satire, humor, and symbolism to provoke thought, challenge authority, and highlight injustices. These visual commentaries distill complex political and social issues into compelling imagery, making them accessible to broad audiences while sparking crucial discussions.'
Local Talent with National Reach
Based in Canmore, Alberta, LaMontagne's cartoons are published in several dozen newspapers across Canada. Last year, he was also a finalist for the National Newspaper Award for his editorial cartoons. His work continues to resonate with readers, offering sharp commentary on current events.
