Bristol Palin Opens Up About Facial Paralysis and Treatment Plans

Bristol Palin, the 35-year-old daughter of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has broken her social media silence to explain a significant health challenge. In an Instagram story posted on Monday, Palin revealed she has been dealing with facial paralysis for over a year and is now pursuing medical intervention to correct the condition.

Seeking Specialized Medical Help

In a video that was subsequently recorded and uploaded to YouTube by Page Six, Palin shared details about her upcoming consultation. "I'm going to have a consultation today with a plastic surgeon in Austin," she stated. "I've read that she specializes in facial paralysis type stuff so we'll see what she says." The former reality television star specifically mentioned her hope for treatment options that could address the functional issues caused by her condition.

Palin expressed particular concern about how the paralysis affects her left eye. "Prayers because maybe she can help mostly with this eye," she continued, pointing to the affected area. "When I smile or when I'm expressive, it closes. I don't really care about my crooked mouth, but my eye... So embarrassing to me. I feel like I should wear an eyepatch or something."

The Functional Impact and Potential Solutions

Demonstrating the physical manifestation of her condition, Palin explained how it impacts her daily expressions. "It looks crazy, and I just feel like I can't even smile because it just closes," she added. The mother of three revealed she's exploring various treatment possibilities with her medical team. "So maybe she can do some Botox or maybe there's some options with surgery. So we'll see! Maybe she can help with this eye or just the overall symmetry."

Background of the Health Condition

This isn't the first time Palin has publicly addressed her facial paralysis. Back in January 2025, she initially announced through an Instagram story, as reported by Access Hollywood, that she had been experiencing facial paralysis for over a week. She described the onset of symptoms to her followers at that time. "I woke up nine days ago with a little weird sensation in my face," Palin recounted. "My mouth was pulling...and it just felt a little off. So I looked in the mirror, and I'm like, 'Wow, this is looking a little weird.'"

The situation progressed rapidly according to her account. She said that within a few hours, the entire left side of her face became completely numb. Medical professionals initially speculated that her condition might be Bell's Palsy, which typically causes sudden weakness in facial muscles on one side of the face. This condition is usually temporary and often improves within several weeks for most patients.

Possible Causes and Recovery Progress

During her initial announcement in early 2025, Palin shared her personal theory about what triggered the paralysis. She believed it was "brought on by stress" and mentioned at that time that she was gradually regaining sensation in her face. The former "Teen Mom OG" star did not provide an update in her most recent video about whether her diagnosis has changed since those initial medical evaluations.

Palin's openness about her health struggle comes after a noticeable absence from showing her face on Instagram, which she directly attributed to the paralysis. Her decision to seek specialized plastic surgery consultation in Austin represents a significant step in addressing a condition that has persisted far longer than typical Bell's Palsy cases, suggesting her situation may involve more complex underlying factors.
