A new television drama series based on the early life of iconic singer Celine Dion is currently in development. Tentatively titled 'Growing Up Dion,' the project has the support of Dion's family and is inspired by the book 'Dion, A Family Saga,' written by her nephew Jimmy Dion.
The series is expected to cover Dion's formative years in Quebec, focusing on her relationships with her parents and her 13 siblings. According to a report from Deadline, the show aims to capture the spirit, struggles, and love that defined the Dion family's upbringing.
Jacques Dion, one of Celine's brothers, is credited as a producer on the project. He expressed pride in finally sharing this story with the world in a way that feels authentic to their family. 'This series represents something deeply meaningful for our family, as it captures the spirit, struggles, and love that defined our upbringing,' he told Deadline.
Despite Dion's immense fame, there have been relatively few biopics about her life. The 2020 French film 'Aline' used a thin fictionalization of her story, while the 2008 CBC-TV movie 'Celine' is best left unmentioned. The most notable predecessor is an English-language biopic titled 'Celine Before Celine,' which Jimmy Dion was reportedly working on before 2020.
'Growing Up Dion' arrives as Dion returns to the stage after several years away from the spotlight. She was forced to cancel much of her 'Courage World Tour' in 2019 and 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome. She made a brief return during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, singing Edith Piaf's 'Hymne a l'amour' at the Eiffel Tower. Her full return to the stage is scheduled for September, with 10 headline shows at La Defense Arena in Paris. Ahead of those shows, Dion released her latest single, 'Dansons,' in April.
While these recent events fall outside the scope of 'Growing Up Dion,' fans can hope for sequels that may cover later chapters of her life.
