London Falling: The True Story of a Teen's Mysterious Death in a World of Deception
Award-winning author Patrick Radden Keefe was immersed in television production in London during the summer of 2023 when a chance encounter with a lawyer on set would lead him to one of the most compelling true crime stories of our time. The lawyer mentioned his best friend, Matthew Brettler, whose son Zac had died under mysterious circumstances four years earlier. This casual conversation would become the foundation for Keefe's latest investigative work, London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and A Family's Search for the Truth, set for release on April 7.
The Tragic Plunge That Started It All
On November 29, 2019, 19-year-old Zac Brettler leaped from the balcony of a luxury tower overlooking the Thames River, plunging to his death in what Scotland Yard initially concluded was a suicide. For Zac's parents, Matthew and Rachelle Brettler, this marked the beginning of a nightmare that would span years. The couple, devastated by their loss, refused to accept the official narrative and embarked on their own quest for answers, determined to uncover what truly happened to their son that fateful night.
What they discovered would shock even seasoned investigators. After Zac's death, his parents learned that their son had been living a double life, pretending to be the son of a Russian oligarch. This revelation opened a Pandora's box of questions about Zac's activities, associations, and the circumstances surrounding his final moments.
An Author's Pursuit of Truth
When Keefe heard this stranger-than-fiction tale, he immediately recognized its potential. "If I can persuade the family to tell the story, if they decide that they are comfortable and ready to talk about it, it would be a way to take these issues I was interested in having to do with the history of London and the role of foreign money in London and explore them through the prism of a narrative about people," Keefe explained in an interview from his New York home.
Remarkably, the Brettlers had managed to keep their tragic story out of the media spotlight for years. But when Keefe approached them, he discovered they were finally ready to share their experience. Four years after losing their son, Matthew and Rachelle remained deeply frustrated by what they perceived as Scotland Yard's passive and lacklustre investigation. They welcomed Keefe's interest, hoping his journalistic rigor might uncover truths that had eluded official channels.
Uncovering London's Hidden Underworld
As Keefe delved deeper into the case, he discovered that Zac's death served as a gateway to a hidden London few outsiders ever see. "The central mystery of Zac's death was compelling," Keefe noted. "But, like the Brettlers before him, Keefe soon discovered that Zac's death was a gateway to a hidden London of conmen, corruption, foreign money, ruthless gangsters and deception."
His initial meetings with the Brettlers were overwhelming. "We sat down and they talked for about two hours, and it all just came out in a jumble," Keefe recalled. "I didn't know who was who; I was confused. When you relay it all out of sequence, it's a confusing story. In the early going, I was just trying to figure out 'who are these people? How do they connect? What is the story here?'"
From Magazine Article to Full-Length Investigation
Keefe first wrote about Zac and his parents in a 2024 New Yorker article but quickly realized the story demanded more extensive treatment. The author, known for his meticulous research and compelling narratives, saw parallels to his previous works. His 2021 bestseller Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty exposed a billionaire family at the center of the opioid epidemic, while 2018's Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland investigated the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville.
London Falling continues this tradition of deep investigative journalism, weaving together multiple narrative threads to create a portrait of modern London that few ever witness. The book introduces readers to a cast of colorful and occasionally frightening characters who inhabit the shadowy spaces where immense wealth intersects with criminal enterprise.
Through the Brettler family's tragedy, Keefe explores broader themes that have long fascinated him: the influx of foreign money into London, the city's transformation into a global financial hub, and the human costs of these economic shifts. The result is a multi-layered narrative that combines true crime investigation with social commentary, offering readers both a gripping mystery and a sobering look at contemporary urban life.
As publication day approaches, London Falling promises to be another landmark work from one of America's most respected investigative journalists, shedding light on a family's search for truth in the face of unimaginable loss and the hidden realities of one of the world's most celebrated cities.
