Edmonton's The Book Boudoir Celebrates Romance and Community at Indie Bookstore Extravaganza
Edmonton's Book Boudoir Joins Indie Bookstore Extravaganza

In the heart of Edmonton, a unique literary haven thrives, dedicated to the timeless allure of romance. The Book Boudoir, founded by Kelsey Orlecki, is not just a bookstore but a sanctuary for those seeking love between the pages. Located at #102 12017 102 Ave. NW, this cozy shop is set to join the Edmonton Indie Bookstore Extravaganza on April 25 and 26, 2026, celebrating local literary culture alongside 15 other independent book retailers.

A Passion for Romance and Connection

"Everybody wants love," says Orlecki, reflecting on her store's mission from a couch in the back half of the shop, accessible through a sliding secret entrance. As a purveyor of romance novels and literature, she has cultivated a space where readers can explore romantic excitement without judgment. The store's decor echoes this theme, with a bathtub in the corner adorned by a pink neon "Good Girl" sign, a ladder named Jacob on the far wall, and titles like The Kiss Thief and Blood and Roses gracing the shelves.

Building a Literary Community

What began as a pop-up project less than three years ago has blossomed into a vibrant community hub. The Book Boudoir hosts book clubs for various romance sub-genres, including a "wandering book club" that shifts themes to encourage exploration beyond comfort zones. Orlecki emphasizes the importance of in-person connections, stating, "I find that being an indie bookstore, it's a central community hub that we've created. Especially with my brand, we've really created a safe space for, particularly women to come and really just be themselves."

Edmonton Indie Bookstore Extravaganza Details

The two-day extravaganza is an extension of Canadian Independent Bookstore Day, a nationwide initiative to support small retailers. Participants can visit stores on the list, collect stamps in a passport, and enter to win merchandise or gift cards. This event brings together long-time sellers like Audreys Books, with over 50 years in the community, and newer establishments such as Porch Light Books and comic book store Variant Edition.

More Than Just a Bookstore

Orlecki's vision extends beyond sales; she aims to provide a "bookish prescription" for readers, tailoring recommendations based on individual preferences. The store attracts both seasoned romance fans and novices drawn to the genre for the first time, fostering a sense of belonging. As Orlecki notes, "People are always looking for connection, and the in-person connection is one of the bigger things."

With its second location now established, The Book Boudoir continues to be a beacon for literary enthusiasts in Edmonton, proving that in a digital age, the charm of indie bookstores and the power of community remain irreplaceable.
