Two prominent women from Waterloo Region and Stratford have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the nation's highest civilian honors. Singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt and University of Waterloo professor Mary Thompson were recognized for their exceptional contributions to Canadian culture and academia.
Loreena McKennitt's Musical Legacy
McKennitt, a Stratford native, is celebrated worldwide for her Celtic-influenced folk music. Her appointment to the Order of Canada acknowledges decades of artistic achievement and humanitarian work. According to the Governor General's office, McKennitt's "haunting vocals and innovative fusion of world music traditions have captivated audiences globally."
McKennitt has sold over 14 million albums worldwide and founded the Stratford Summer Music festival. She also established the McKennitt Foundation, which supports environmental and cultural initiatives.
Mary Thompson's Academic Impact
Mary Thompson, a professor emerita at the University of Waterloo, was honored for her pioneering research in statistics and survey methodology. Her work has shaped how data is collected and analyzed in Canada and beyond. Thompson served as president of the Statistical Society of Canada and received numerous awards for her contributions.
Thompson's research on survey design has been instrumental in improving the accuracy of national health and economic surveys. She also mentored generations of statisticians through her teaching and supervision of graduate students.
