Postmedia Calgary photographers were busy capturing the sights around the city this weekend, as Heritage Park and Calaway Park opened for the season and Otafest brought anime and pop culture enthusiasts together.
Saturday
A snowy spring start greeted visitors on opening day at Heritage Park on Saturday, May 16, 2026. Interpreter Kelsey Ross was seen walking through the snow, adding a unique charm to the historic site.
Meanwhile, downtown Calgary hosted Otafest, the Japanese anime and pop culture festival, at the Telus Convention Centre. Participants braved the spring snow to attend, with many dressed as characters from popular series. Artist Sabrina Huang was spotted sketching, while Kevin Maxwell delighted crowds as a level 1 mushroom from the manga Delicious in Dungeon. Cosplayers dressed as characters from Hollow Knight, Identity V (the Bloody Queen), and Star Rail added color to the event. Art played a significant role, with visitors chatting and learning about each other's characters.
Sunday
After heavy spring snow delayed its annual opening, Calaway Park welcomed guests on Sunday, May 17, 2026, under sunny blue skies. Some visitors wore hats and gloves in the morning chill, but the clear weather made for a perfect opening day. Roller coaster riders enjoyed the rides, and Leena and Tiia were seen having fun. A brand new entrance area greeted attendees, marking a fresh start for the amusement park.
