A variety of theatre and music performances, an anniversary celebration, and a local craft market are just a few of the indoor and outdoor events to support and explore this weekend in Saskatoon.
1. Celebrate 40 Years of Francophone Theatre
La Troupe du Jour celebrates 40 years of creating, producing, and promoting Francophone theatre in Saskatchewan. Radio-Canada's Pascale Bouchard and Manuela Ejake host an '80s-themed evening, featuring a new logo unveiling. There will be play readings, a short feature on the theatre's history, snacks, and surprises. Attendees are invited to dress in their best '80s attire. The event is Saturday at Studio 914 at 6 p.m. Learn more at latroupedujour.ca/40-years.
2. Support Queer Theatre
Persephone Theatre presents a play reading of Jen Silverman's Witch. A kick-off to the fifth annual Queermunity Theatre Festival, which runs June 4-6, the play is a dark comedy about saving the world and ourselves. A charming devil bargains for souls, taking villagers' darkest wishes in exchange. The devil thinks Elizabeth, who has been labelled a witch by the others, will be an easy target. But her soul is not easily bought. The reading is Saturday at the theatre's BackStage Stage at 7 p.m. Learn more at persephonetheatre.org.
3. Take an Emotional Journey with the SSO
The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra closes out its 95th season with Finding Light. Guest conductor Judith Yan leads the SSO in a program of new and old works, featuring pieces by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Remo Giazotto, with inspiration from Tomaso Albinoni. Guest vocalists soprano Kateryna Khartova and alto Oli Guselle take centre stage on the emotional, musical journey through grief, reflection, tenderness, and light. The concert is Saturday at Knox United Church at 7:30 p.m. Learn more at saskatoonsymphony.org.
4. Myth and Memory Collide in Music
The Saskatoon Fiddle Orchestra presents its 22nd annual spring show, Legends and Lore. Traditional and modern melodies from diverse cultures are woven together in a blend of myth and memory. Let the music transport you across time and place as it journeys through ancient folklore and contemporary imagination. The concert is Saturday at the Broadway Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Learn more at saskatoonfiddleorchestra.wordpress.com or broadwaytheatre.ca.
