Edmonton Artists to Paint Live Murals at Home and Garden Show for Charity

If you have ever wanted to witness the creation of a large-scale mural from start to finish, an exciting opportunity awaits at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show. Two prominent Edmonton artists, Ashley Rosenow and Lorraine Shulba, will be painting live, larger-than-life murals during the event, offering a unique spectacle for visitors.

Paint with Purpose Program Returns

Well-known muralist Ashley Rosenow, founder of Illustrious Interiors, is bringing back her innovative Paint with Purpose program to the show. This year, she will collaborate with emerging muralists to create artworks painted live at the event. "This is a fantastic opportunity for new artists to learn mural techniques while creating something beautiful," Rosenow explains.

Once completed, these murals will be donated to charities and non-profit organizations across Edmonton. Rosenow emphasizes the deeper connection behind her work: "Every mural I paint, I lead with my heart, trying to connect my art on a deeper level. Paint with Purpose has allowed me to create meaningful murals while working closely with local charities that provide comfort and healing."

Creating Connection Through Custom Murals

Award-winning muralist and fine artist Lorraine Shulba highlights how murals can transform a home. "Murals are more than just decoration; they are a way to bring joy, inspiration, and a sense of connection to your space," she says. Shulba advises homeowners to consider several factors when planning a mural:

  • The purpose of the room
  • The desired mood
  • Lighting conditions
  • How the space is used daily

"A mural is an experience, not just a wall covering—it interacts with your life daily," Shulba notes. "Plan for the long term, thinking about the feeling and flow, how people move through the room, and what they see first."

Overcoming Common Concerns

Rosenow encourages homeowners not to shy away from color and creativity. "Many people worry about resale value or the commitment," she says. "If a mural isn't too specific, it can add value to your home. And if not, it can easily be covered with a coat of paint." She adds that murals can evolve with a space over time, interacting with changing light, shadows, and furniture placement, and can always be modified if desired.

Collaborative Design Process

Choosing a mural design should be a collaborative effort. Shulba recommends involving the whole family to select a design that becomes a living piece of art. Rosenow recently painted murals in her children's rooms, allowing them to choose their designs. "I allowed them to pick whatever they wanted—it was a way to make their rooms feel like their own, a space that feels safe for them," she shares.

Wall size also plays a crucial role in design. Larger walls are ideal for immersive scenes or landscapes, while smaller spaces work well for bold or symbolic elements. "I recommend balancing personal meaning and visual impact," Shulba advises. "Incorporating natural motifs or organic forms that echo the rhythm of the environment will make your wall feel alive."
