The City of Calgary is actively seeking a new location for the historic Ogden Block building and is offering to donate the structure to any group capable of relocating it. This initiative aims to preserve the building's rich history while making way for the Green Line LRT project.
Building's Historical Significance
Also known as Hong Lee Laundry and Ogden Laundry, the building was constructed in 1913. According to the city, it represents a rare example of a Chinese-owned building situated outside Calgary's historic Chinatown. Initially serving as Hong Lee Laundry, it later fulfilled various roles, including a boarding house for Chinese immigrants and other residential purposes. Between 1916 and 1918, it is believed to have functioned as a hospital for injured veterans.
Current Condition and Relocation Plans
The 3,240-square-foot building is currently vacant and has been boarded up for several years. Although the structure remains intact, it is not suitable for occupancy. The city, which acquired the building in 2021, has indicated that significant investment is required to meet modern building standards. The city hopes to relocate the building by November 15 and will contribute $50,000 to support moving costs. If a suitable proponent is not found by the deadline, the building will be demolished to maintain the Green Line project timeline.
Call for Community Involvement
Ward 9 Coun. Harrison Clark emphasized the unique opportunity for the community or an interested organization to give new life to a building that reflects Ogden's diverse and layered past. He encouraged those with the capacity and vision to consider how the structure could be preserved and reused. Wendy Tynan, director of the Green Line LRT – S.E. Project, expressed appreciation for Clark's leadership and noted that the relocation offers a final chance for someone to own a piece of Calgary's history while keeping the project on schedule.
Application Process
The city is seeking candidates who demonstrate a connection to the building's story or the surrounding community. Interested parties must fill out an online application form, which must include the proposed use of the building, demonstrated ability and financial capacity to relocate it, an agreement to the terms and conditions of the transaction, and a nominal offer of $1.
