Artist Karen Scarlett is creating a public mural in Innisfail, Alberta, that celebrates the town's grain farming history. The project involves the help of 100 volunteers from the community.
Mural details and community involvement
The mural, which will be painted on a prominent wall in downtown Innisfail, depicts scenes from the region's agricultural past, including grain elevators, fields of wheat, and farmers at work. Scarlett said the idea came from a desire to honor the town's roots and bring the community together through art.
“I wanted to create something that really reflects the spirit of Innisfail and the people who have built this community,” Scarlett said. “Grain farming is at the heart of our identity, and this mural is a way to celebrate that.”
Volunteers from local schools, businesses, and organizations have been helping with the painting, which began earlier this week. The project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
Impact on the community
The mural is part of a broader effort to revitalize Innisfail's downtown area. Local officials hope the artwork will attract visitors and boost local businesses. “Public art has a way of bringing people together and making a place more vibrant,” said Mayor Jean Barclay. “We're thrilled to have Karen and so many volunteers working on this project.”
The initiative has also received funding from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Town of Innisfail.
