A 7-year-old boy from Saskatoon turned his admiration for soccer star Erling Haaland into a fundraising campaign that has raised thousands of dollars for children with cancer, according to his mother.
From Haircut to Charity
The boy, whose name has not been disclosed, initially wanted a haircut resembling the distinctive style of Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland. His mother, Sarah, told CTV News that the idea evolved into a broader effort to help children battling cancer.
“He said, ‘Mom, I want to help kids who are sick,’” Sarah recalled. The family set up an online fundraising page and shared the story on social media, quickly garnering support from the community.
Community Response
Within weeks, the campaign raised over $5,000, which will be donated to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s pediatric oncology program. Donations came from friends, neighbors, and even strangers inspired by the boy’s initiative.
“It’s amazing to see how one small idea can grow into something so impactful,” Sarah said. The boy also received a personalized video message from a local soccer player, encouraging his efforts.
Impact on Pediatric Cancer Care
The funds will support research and resources for children undergoing cancer treatment at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. According to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, approximately 50 children are diagnosed with cancer in the province each year.
The boy’s story has resonated widely, with many praising his empathy and determination. “He’s a shining example of how kids can make a difference,” said a spokesperson for the agency.
